Good Fats and Bad Fats
Good fats
It is important to know our bodies need a certain amount of ‘good’ fats such as the polyunsaturated, Omega 6 and Omega 3 types, for good health. Although not essential in the diet, monounsaturated fats are also thought to be ‘healthier’ fats as they have a neutral effect on blood cholesterol.
Trans-fats are good when they are naturally present in milk and meat. Australians have a relatively low intake of trans-fats from dairy and meat. Natural trans-fats in your diet appear to decrease the risk of heart disease, and may actually help to protect against it.
Bad fats
It is recommended that you limit your intake of deep fried take away food, and manufactured sweets such as cakes, biscuits and pastries, so that your diet is low in the processed ‘bad’ trans-fats. These kinds of foods are the main source of ‘bad’ trans-fats in the Australian diet.
