Good Things Come in Tetra-Tops

07.08.2006

A safe, convenient and ’fresh’ revolution in dairy packaging is underway on Australia’s supermarket shelves.

Dairy Farmers’ pourable custard in the new “tetra-top” package with the screw-top and tamper-proof seal is already winning hearts among consumers and supermarket operators alike, says David Ferreira, Senior Brand Manager, Dairy Snacks.

Tetra-top is a new package for pourable dairy products, with a square paper carton topped by a plastic screw-cap and a tamper-proof seal.

“The feedback on the new tetra-top is terrific.  Consumers say it’s easier to use, there’s no mess, you can re-seal it and you can be totally confident about the quality and safety of the product,” Mr Ferreira says.

The tetra-top also heralds a major advance in dairy products – and a change in the way consumers perceive them.

Sealed in ultra-hygienic conditions it can keep the product fresh for 45 days or more, in the chilled section of the supermarket.

“The pack is inverted and filled from the bottom up, then sealed under ultra-hygienic conditions. The whole filling area contains hepa-filtered air under positive pressure, designed to exclude any kind of micro-organism,” he explains.

This, and a heat treatment, is the key to the extra long-life achieved in tetra-packed products.

The new machine is also lightning-fast compared to more traditional packaging processes, powering through 9,000 cartons an hour at full steam – five every two seconds.

The advantages of the tetra top include:
  • convenient to open and re-seal
  • tamper-proof seal
  • ultra-hygienic processing for long shelf-life
  • no mess when open, no crusty bits around the spout
  • convenient shape for storage and handling
  • fast, efficient production
  • come in single to family-serve sizes, from 250 grams up to 1 kilogram

Dairy Farmers has launched the tetra-top containing its custard range, however Mr Ferreira says that overseas the carton is used for a wide range of products.

“Globally, tetra tops are being used for flavoured milks, fermented products, smoothies, creams, juices – the full range of liquid dairy products. We certainly expect to expand its uses in Australia.”
