Dairy Farmers’ existing North Queensland operations – which include a 100 employee milk and cheese factory in Malanda and a network of 80 dairy farms on the Atherton Tablelands – will be bolstered by the million dollar distribution facility in the Townsville suburb of Garbutt.
An extensive capital upgrade to Dairy Farmers’ existing site will result in the new distribution centre boasting an additional 300 square metres of refrigerated space for the Co-operative’s range of white and flavoured milk products, all of which are produced in North Queensland from local farmers’ milk.
Dairy Farmers Chief Executive Rob Gordon said the Co-operative’s decision to significantly expand its Townsville presence was based on the key role the city played in the region both now and into the future.
“As the region’s only truly local milk company, Dairy Farmers is very focussed on growing its presence in North Queensland,” Mr Gordon said.
“The Co-operative already has a very strong association with Townsville based on our sponsorship of Dairy Farmers Stadium. And, given Townsville’s position as the region’s largest city – and one of the fastest growing areas in the State – it seemed only natural to expand our local operations.
“Dairy Farmers’ Townsville distribution centre, which represents more than a million dollar investment for our business, will act as a hub from where the products will be sent to retail outlets as far north as Cooktown, Mt Isa to the west and south to Mackay.
The Townsville project forms part of Dairy Farmers’ overall investment in North Queensland to strengthen and grow its market leading position, and includes a multimillion dollar upgrade to its Malanda factory and Cairns depot, creating six new jobs in Cairns.
